SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES THAT RELATE TO THE ABOVE DEPARTMENT/POSITION: The Library Assistant II (Information and User Services) has primary duties in the reference services department of the library, and additional duties coordinated with the library information services manager. As part of the reference department, this position provides reference assistance to library patrons, teaches basic library research skills to individual users by assisting them in locating information and using library resources, has responsibilities in training and supervising student workers, oversees intake of new state documents and maintains the state documents collection, assists in maintenance of the university’s archives collections, and undertakes various departmental projects as determined by the head of reference services. This position also works with the LIS manager on such projects as maintaining library websites, computer maintenance and upgrading, troubleshooting, and minor repairs. As part of the general library team, this position covers some evening hours in Access Services by providing basic services in that department as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: The person in this position assists users in developing search strategies, recommends appropriate resources for locating information, and provides guidance in evaluating information. Must have a basic understanding of how to effectively search in online resources and how to evaluate information. Familiarity with library databases, Internet resources, and print information sources is essential. This position also provides assistance to patrons using library equipment, provides technological hardware and software support for library users and staff, and assists the library information services manager in maintaining and troubleshooting the library network and computers and recommends repairs, and collaborates with the LISM in maintaining the library website. The person in this position must demonstrate a commitment to providing public service with a positive attitude and qualities of initiative, good judgment, and resourcefulness; have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written skills; and be able to work well with the public and with individuals from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Must work as an effective team member, demonstrate the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, manage time productively, and organize and prioritize multiple information requests. Knowledge of basic skills essential for computer maintenance and technology troubleshooting, the ability to learn more advanced skills as needed, and the ability to learn fundamental HTML coding skills, including PHP and CSS is required. Proficiency with Dreamweaver preferred.
